What is meant "heat start"?

In a Spartan Race, you start in groups called "heat" every 15 minutes, each consisting of approximately 90 participants. The number of participants in each battery and the start time depends on the total number of registrants and the event.

The new COVID-19 protocol calls for 90 athletes to start every 15 minutes.

Run against the best in the Elite category, the first heat of the day, dedicated to professional athletes. The Elite category is the only heat in which there are monetary awards ONLY in certain predetermined races. The best athletes of the Elite category will be awarded on the podium with a medal, prizes and the possibility to enter the Spartan Championships.

The Age Group heat is instead dedicated to all those who wish to challenge athletes of the same age group, for athletes who do not yet feel up to participate in the Elite, but aim to be part of it in future races. The best athletes in each age group will be rewarded on the podium with a medal and a chance at the Spartan Championships.

All non-competitive batteries are instead called Open heats and open to everyone from beginners to veterans. When you register online, you can decide which battery to start with.
